National Institutes for the Mentally Handicapped (NIMH), Secunderabad (A.P)

Objectives:

· To develop appropriate models of care and rehabilitation for the persons with mental retardation appropriate to Indian conditions.

· To develop manpower for delivery of services to the persons with mental retardation.

· To identify, conduct and co-ordinate research in the area of mental retardation.

· To provide consultancy services to voluntary organisations in the area of mental handicap and to assist them wherever necessary.

· To serve as a documentation and information centre in the area of mental retardation.

· To acquire relevant data to assess the magnitude causes, rural urban composition, socio-economic factors, etc. of mental retardation in the country.

· To promote and stimulate growth of various kinds of quality services in the country for persons with mental retardation throughout the country.

National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped Calcutta (W.B)

For promoting, education, training and rehabilitation of the handicapped, Orthopaedically Handicapped children and adults suffering from a wide range of disabilities which limit their mobility, muscular coordination and manipulative ability, the National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped was set up at Calcutta. It was registered as an autonomous society in April, 1982.

· To develop manpower for providing services to the orthopaedically handicapped population, namely, training of Physiotherapist, Occupational therapist, Orthopaedic and Prosthetic Technicians, Employment and Placement Officers, vocational counsellors etc.

· To develop model services for the orthopaedically handicapped population in the areas of restorative surgery, aids and appliances,vocational training etc.

· To provide services and special services to the orthopaedically handicapped people.

· To conduct and sponsor research into all aspects, related to the total rehabilitation of the orthopaedically handicapped.

· To standardise the aids and appliances for the orthopaedically handicapped and to promote their manufacture and distribution. To serve as the Apex Documentation and Information Centre in the area of orthopaedically handicapped.

· To provide consultancy services to the State Govts. And voluntary organisations, working for rehabilitation of orthopaedically handicapped.

Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped, Mumbai (M.S)

On August 9, 1983, the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped was established in Mumbai.

Objective :

· To conduct, sponsor, coordinate & subsidize research for the education and rehabilitation of the hearing handicapped.

· To undertake, sponsor, coordinate or subsidize research for biomedical engineering – resulting in the effective evaluation of aids, also surgical or medical procedure or the development of the new aids.

· To undertake or sponsor programs for trainees and teachers, employment officers, psychologists, vocational counsellors and such other personnel as may be deemed necessary by the Institute for promoting education, training and rehabilitation of the hearing handicapped.

· To distribute or promote of subsidize the manufacture of prototypes the manufacture or prototypes and distribution of any, or all aids, designed to promote the education, rehabilitation or therapy of the hearing handicapped.

National Institute for the Visually Handicapped, Dehradun (U.A)

The National Institute for the Visually Handicapped was established in July 1979 by upgrading the National Centre for the Blind. It was registered in October, 1982 and gained the status of an autonomous body.

Objective :

· To conduct, sponsor, coordinate & subsidise research for the education and rehabilitation of the visually handicapped.

· To undertake, sponsor, coordinate or subsidise research for biomedical engineering – resulting in the effective evaluation of aids, also surgical or medical procedure or the development of the new aids.

Institute for the Physically Handicapped, New Delhi

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute for the Physically Handicapped

Pt. Deendayal Upadhyaya Institute for the Physically Handicapped is an autonomous organisation under the administrative and financial control of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India. This institute came into being when the erstwhile Jawahar Lal Nehru Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and other allied institution run by the council for the Aid of crippled & handicapped were taken over by the Govt. of India on 22nd May 1975 and converted into an autonomous body in the year 1976.

The Institute aims to serve the physically disabled of all age groups. In this pursuit of alleviating the suffering of disabled people, the Institute runs following programme :-

· Bachelor of Physical Therapy, Bachelor of Occupational Therapy and Bachelor of Prosthetics & Orthotics, 4 ½ years duration course in affiliation with University of Delhi.

· Out patient clinical services in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy.

· Workshop for the fabrication of Orthotic and Prosthetic appliances including calipers, splints, artificial limbs, surgical boots and customized wooden furniture for the persons with different types of locomotor impairments.

· Conduct out-reach camps for the economically weaker disabled persons, living in the far-flung and remote areas, with the help of concerned district administration and locally active non-governmental organizations.

· Extend institutional comprehensive rehabilitation services to persons with disabilities by establishing & operationalizing of Southern Regional Rehabilitation Centre (SRC), Secunderabad (AP), District Disability Rehabilitation Centres (DDRCs) and facilitating the establishment of Regional Spinal Injury Centre.

· Integrated School for orthopaedically disabled children up-to Vth standard approved by Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

· Provide Social, Psychological and Vocational Counseling Services to the persons with disabilities.

· Printing Press to cater to the printing needs of the Institute and Ministry for dissemination of information and generation of awareness.

National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research Olatpur, Cuttack and Orissa

National Institute of Rehabilitation, Training and Research (NIRTAR) was registered as a society on Feb, 24, 1984 and is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.

Objectives:

· To promote the use of products of ALIMCO.

· Human Research Development – To undertake, sponsor or coordinate training of personnel such as Doctors, Engineers, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Prosthetic and Orthotic Technicians, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Multi-Purpose Rehabilitation Therapists and such other personnel for the rehabilitation of the physically handicapped.

· Research – To conduct, sponsor, coordinate or subsidise research on biomechanical engineering leading to the effective evaluation of the mobility aids for the orthopaedically disabled persons or suitable surgical or medical procedures or development of new aids.

· Aids and Appliance – To promote distribute, subsidise the manufacture of prototype designed aids and to promote any aspects of the education and rehabilitation therapy of physically handicapped.

· Service Delivery Programmes – To develop models of service delivery programmes for rehabilitation.

· Vocational Training – To undertake vocational training, placement and rehabilitation of the physically handicapped.

· Information – To promote and disseminate information on rehabilitation in India and abroad.

· To undertake any other action in the area of rehabilitation of the physically handicapped.

· All the income will be utilised for the fulfilment of above aims and objectives.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR EMPOWERMENT OF PERSONS WITH MULITIPLE DISABILITIES (NIEPMD)

The Objective of the institute are:

(a) to undertake development of human resources for management, training, rehabilitation, education, employment and social development with multiple disabilities

(b) to promote and conduct research and areas relating to multiple disabilities and to development transdisciplinary model and strategies for social rehabilitation to meet the needs of diverse groups of people with multiple disabilities.

Activities/Courses:
Both long term and short term courses in the field of multiple disabilities will be undertaken in the institute i.e. Graduate and post Graduate courses in development therapies, Master in rehabilitation psychology, Development in Special Education (multiple disability) etc.
