‘Human being’ Gods beautiful creation & ‘woman’ is the best creation among all those creations. She is the creator of this world who plays different roles on the stage of life. Out of all roles played by her the most adorable and dignified role is when she is adored by the title of ‘Mother’. The word mother itself says how special it is. Mother – The ultimate word that evokes the world inside every individual.

Our country holds “A Mother” in high regard. The role of a mother is reckoned with high esteem for a woman. But the scenario is completely different when it comes to the subject of a woman with physical disabilities. There is an ambiguous question in everyone’s mind if a physically challenged woman can be a good mother??? The world holds a diverse thought that a differently abled women cannot make up to take care of a family while she is amidst the way to pursue her own life with extreme struggle. Well, such discrimination is expected from a society where girls and women with any form of disability are considered the most vulnerable and marginalized.

Loving life madly and a craving to live it fully conquer all odds and debunk every myth. When you do something beyond everyone’s imagination you release your real strength and bring out the best in you. On this special occasion of Mothers day, Here is a small effort to bring into light a real life story of such a mother whose distinct attitude towards life has made motherhood a very special one. A story of a woman and Mother, Mrs. Innusingh Tripathy, who proved and is still proving that the so called impossibilities by the world are just a perception. An ambitious woman who strives to accomplish her dreams, a perfect homemaker who acquires respect in all aspects of social life.

Innu was born and brought up in a joint family of Bhubaneswar. She was paralyzed due to polio at an infant age which claimed her lower limbs. She is married with Mr. Paresh Tripathy, an admin in accounts department of a top rated B-School in Bhubaneswar. She is living a dignified marital life for last 11 years. Now her world revolves around their only son, 8 years old Priyansh. An “ABLE MOTHER” who is indeed successfully raising her child with no difference.

Being independent has been the ultimate goal of a physically disabled individual. Apart from that when she is in position to handle the role of a Mother, it’s inevitable that she needs a lot of inner strength and determination to get along with it. She needs to possess endurance both mentally and physically. But that is never an excuse to do the impossible.

Let’s ask the mother herself whether being in a wheelchair, she faces any difficulty in bringing up her child?

“Being a woman achieving motherhood was obvious and satisfying like any other normal women. The difference I remember is that I was surrounded by many questioning eyes that doubts on my capability in bearing a child and taking proper care, especially on the health issues. Many questions like whether the child will be healthy or will it inherit the mother’s physical condition or should the husband take the sole responsibility for the mother and the child and many more doubts were raised.

Thanks to almighty God, as he had made me a strong woman. Wheelchair has never been a bar in my life. I find that my strong mind and confidence along with some extra time and effort made it easier in bringing up my child to my expected level.

No one is strong until they have gone through the trials of life. The hardships she had faced in her early stage of life have indeed brought her this ultimate strength and power to accomplish all she had dreamt of. Sometimes the experience of harshness can make us emotionally stronger, more tolerant, patient and understanding – all ideal qualities of a parent!!

It is said that, “The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.”

When a child is born it is up to the parents, how seriously they are accepting parenthood, how sensibly they want to nurture their child. A differently abled mother can be a good or bad parent like any other individual. Parenthood is more a matter of dedication and perseverance than physical strength. Thus varies from person to person.

Today Innu takes care of her son with utmost warmth, nourish him, tender him, and carry out all the daily chores with great love and care. Nevertheless the obstacles, a strong desire to bring up her child successfully has given the power to look beyond her imperfections and step into the role of a perfect Mother. She has managed to do it well and good all the way long and proved that “Disable” is just a word of description by the society but it holds no value in the heart of a mother. She owes a lot to her husband, “this could not have been accomplished without the support and encouragement of my better half.”

Motherhood doesn’t understand the term “able” or “disable”. A physically disabled Mother is a no difference to the child. Today Priyansh depends on his mother for everything. She conquered all the trust and confidence of her son. Here we would like to share a short and cute incident which itself says a lot.

Little Priyansh was very apprehensive when his mother was going to attend the first parent-teacher meeting in school. He said, “If anyone is bad to you, I will kill that person”. He was anxious about the response of friends and teachers. His mother assured nothing such will happen. Yes everything was smooth and it was like any other parent-teacher meet. After school Priyansh ran after to her mother and was bubbling with joy. He found a positive response in everyone’s eyes. Friends said “your mother is so beautiful”. Teachers were pleased too. Now he prefers his mother to attend every meeting in school as he feels “mamma knows my drawbacks and strength better than papa”.

Never ever underestimate the power of Motherhood. A mother who is full of love and courage, showed that dreams come true when nurtured with discipline, sincere effort and never give up attitude. She eventually proved that physically challenged people are no less in becoming a good parent – just like anyone else.

When she was asked to drop a message for future mothers who are differently abled and going through the same dilemmas of life, she said, “I will address all mothers to be strong in mind and full of confidence and this will lead to achieve all the best”.

We convey all our good wishes to Innu and Priyansh, and all such mothers out here. Hope they may achieve whatever they dreamt for and beyond.

Winners are the one who dare to dream,

The Rajya Sabha passed an amendment in the RTE Act recently widening the beneficiary net for children with disability and providing those with severe disability such autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation and multiple disabilities the benefit of choosing to study from home.

Members of the Disability Legislative Unit (Tamil Nadu), Vidya Sagar and Tamil Nadu Handicapped Federation feel legislating home-based education will only prompt schools and policy-makers to take the easier route of denying children education in mainstream schools by confining them to houses.

“Home-bound”

“It will be home-bound and not home-based education,” said Smitha Sadasivan of the DLU. Children, when included in mainstream education enjoy and thrive in the exposure to sports, playgrounds and organised activities with their peers. This is necessary for them to evolve and be empowered, she added, asserting that the step was a violation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, to which India is a signatory.

Home-based education in the State is in its nascent stage and cannot be even considered as an alternative to schooling.

As of now, one special educator teaches children registered in eight Corporation Schools and visits their home not more than once a week to impart, ‘home-based education’. “There is so much that these children miss out on. It is only what the educator teaches them and never what they want to learn on their own,” said Dipti Bhatia, deputy director, Vidya Sagar.

Experts note that home-based education emerged as a remedial alternative to be used in exceptional situation when the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan began focussing on the concept of inclusive education.

However, it often ends up sidelining children with disabilities who could very well be integrated into mainstream schools.

The amendment reflects an act of washing one’s hands of the responsibility of making schools and transport accessible to children with disability and providing them inclusive education.

“And if home-based education is that good, why make it only for the severely disabled children,” asked Ms. Bhatia. “And, who are the ‘severely disabled’ people that the act talks about? There is no definition of disability there or how considerable the disability is. Has there been any sort of scientific study that said home-based education is better for them,” she asked.

Unanswered questions

There are other very pertinent questions that remain unanswered, said T.M.N. Deepak, disability activist. “What are the standards for such education and will there be qualified home instructors, given that the Rehabilitation Council of India faces a shortage of special educators already? What will be the syllabus and who will monitor the teaching and learning patterns?” he asked.

Acing Your Interview: Tips That Will Get You the Job

Interviewing for a job can feel like jumping through a series of hoops. From preparing your clothes to figuring out the estimated driving time, each task presents a series of challenges leading up the interview. Once inside, the real work begins: Presenting yourself as the ideal candidate for the position. Different jobs require different skills and roles and preparing yourself for these roles can place you at the head of the competition.

Recent graduates and even seasoned veterans can crash and burn during a job interview. Sometimes, you just need to take a deep breath, relax and practice a bit to ace the interview. You might need to endure several interviews before getting the job, but the idea is to practice, prepare and remain confident. Here are some tips to guide along that path:

Prepare a Portfolio – Show off your past work and accomplishments. Your resume can only say so much about you that sometimes a portfolio can display past projects you helped accomplish. Businesses like to see what they’re getting before they hire you. A portfolio can offer insight into your abilities to accomplish a role and help you stand out from the competition. Make sure you have the proper qualifications and degree for the job you are applying for, and that if you dont, you find a college to get that degree.
Say you work in an industry where you cannot bring samples of past work, like a counselor. Use a professional blog to share your knowledge and abilities to perform the role you are applying for. Be proactive and display to your employer that you have the skills and abilities. If you have a disability, a portfolio can display to your employer that you can perform the job just as good as anyone else.

Appearance, Eye Contact and Responses – You want to prepare your portfolio and practice interview questions first. Then prepare the little things, such as laying out your dress attire, practicing making eye contact and learning to speak confidently while avoiding any slang. If you have a disability, remember – you do not need to answer any questions about a condition as it is illegal. The forms you fill out before an interview can only ask if you need assistance because of a disability.
Take your time to respond to questions and think about your answer before you say it. Review your previous accomplishments with your prospective employer and speak in a positive, confident manner. For example, use positive, active verbs. Avoid using passive language, such as “I think,” “I believe” or “I feel.” Instead, use verbs that show how confident you are in performing the role, such as “I know” and “I am capable.”

Practice Makes Perfect – You’re not going to know what type of questions an interviewer will ask you. However, that does not mean you cannot practice asking yourself some sample questions to prepare. Every job will require different skills and will ask different questions. Roles in the business industry may ask about your ability to speak with people. An interviewer may come up with a hypothetical scenario and expect you to answer. While an interview for a design company as a graphic designer may ask you about your creative abilities under a tight deadline.
It’s best to prepare yourself with sample questions about the role. Use the job description as a guide. Look at the skills required and derive questions from the required roles. Preparing yourself will help you give solid answers without stumbling and mumbling through a response.
